The family mug making workshop at 4Cats is one of those things that we do with one of the kids, every time a new mug is available. In the end, we’ve got this collection of hand made mugs, from kids size to full size, filled with memories of how we made them, like how the first bunny mug Olivia made, fell apart and how the bunny mug was Dad’s first creation.
The workshop is 90 minutes long, and begins with crafting the mug, from clay. We used stencils to trace the bottom and the sides of the mug, following instructions and assembling the mug. When it’s been assembled, it’s time to paint. After the workshop, we leave it for a few days to get fired in the kiln and be finished.
The fee of $25/person for a mug gives you the full experience of creating the mug from the bottom up, so to speak, and you get to bring it home when you’re finished. It’s 90 minutes of working with your hands, of time to connect, to try something new, together.
The family mug workshop is recommended for kids 6+. Younger children may have a more difficult time working with the clay – and if your child is, you’re right there to help them with it.
The mugs are adorable, fun, and a great collection piece where you get to work on something together, and bring it home when you’re finished, to have over and over. The mugs are one of my favourite new traditions that we’ve started to do with the kids, and so far, we’ve got a pair of penguins, a pair of bunnies and we’re looking forward to the next workshop, the watermelon or pineapple mug.
You can find the mug making classes at your local 4Cats Studio (there are multiple locations in Edmonton) and make sure you sign up ahead of time, because spaces are limited.
