Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day – we know that, but when it comes to getting the food into children before school, some just don’t want to eat as soon as they get up. Ours start to think about breakfast after they’ve been up for more than an hour, making those mornings when you’ve got to get out of the house for school problematic.
To entice our kids to eat breakfast before school, we’ve got to keep things fresh and exciting. This year, we’re channelling our West Coats Spirit as we ready ourselves for those busy mornings. This laid back, mellow and wholesome spirit of Olympic means finding new inspiration for children who traditionally resist breakfast on school mornings.
Encouraging them to do it themselves gets the kids involved in breakfast and helps them to make their own decisions (with the healthy base and toppings that you provide on the table).
Breakfast Yogurt Sundae Bowls
Serving yogurt in a waffle bowl, with healthy toppings for the children to choose from, these fresh sundaes are a take on breakfast that have been successful around here. As a bonus, I can get them on the table in minutes and can control the nutrition with the yogurt ‘sundae’ and ‘toppings’ we provide.
For this recipe, we used plain Olympic Organic Yogurt. The creamy plain yogurt is a favourite for the sundae base, because we can sweeten it naturally with honey or maple syrup, and we don’t need to worry about sugar or dyes.
You’ll need:
• Bowls (you could also use waffle bowls, for added fun)
• Olympic Organic Yogurt
• Assorted toppings – granola, fruit, almonds, dark chocolate, honey, chocolate crisps
Start by assembling the bowls for the kids, filling them with yogurt and drizzling with honey. For regular easy breakfasts, use jars to serve the toppings as they’re an easy way to get breakfast on the table quickly, and they make cleaning up simple.
How do you choose yogurt? We look for yogurt with as few ingredients as possible, with no gelatins and preservatives, and Olympic products fit the bill. They’re made local in Delta B.C. with 100% natural ingredients and fresh milk from cows who live close to their dairies. Larger, more convenient containers mean less recycling in our bin and stretch the breakfast budget a little further.
Good nature. Good people. Good yogurt.
