“I love old people almost as much as I like fried chicken” Unsure where she picked that up, it described our experience at Northern Chicken well, the kids noshing on fried chicken, and me regretting not ordering a second order of mac and cheese.
As we tend to do when we bring the kids to a new restaurant, we order as many things as our bellies will allow, having a taste of as much as we can, and choosing a favourite for next time. This time around, we ordered the original fried chicken, peanut potato salad, dorito mac and cheese, honey thyme cornbread, chicken sandwich and lemonade, to top it all off.
We sat ourselves at the table and the adults made their way up to the counter to order. Bustling during a late lunch rush on Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t a place that I felt apprehensive about leaving the kids at the table, they were fine – and fit right in. Kid friendly? 100%.
For the four of us, there was plenty of food to share for a quick lunch on 124th Street, but there were a few favourites that were devoured quickly, and I had to act fast to get in my bites – the Dorito mac and cheese, the fried chicken, and surprisingly, the chicken sandwich and the peanut potato salad.
Surprised by the kids enjoyment of the peanut potato salad, shocked actually, I didn’t give them an idea of what the side was before we ordered it, but let them taste it. I enjoyed it just as much, and it just worked with a little bit of kick and a whole lot of flavour.
The one dish that was eaten the quickest way the mac and cheese, followed by the kids each grabbing a piece of chicken, in between bites out of the chicken sandwiches we ordered for ourselves.
The lonely plate of honey thyme cornbread was left, with the kids preferring the classic variety. This was one dish to me, that was a bit odd, I liked it – but I didn’t love it, and yet I kept going back at it, another bite at a time.
Though it was a seat-yourself and order at the counter restaurant, we had staff checking on us to bring us more drinks – which was nice when your’e wrangling kids. Leave the stroller at home, the space isn’t very large. Also, consider bringing a travel high chair because there wasn’t one available when we went (it was very busy). We get it. All in all, between the food, environment and service – Northern Chicken was kid-friendly.
At just under $80 for a family meal out for the four of us (keep in mind that we ordered quite a bit of food, probably more than we needed) it was about average for what we expected to pay. The taste and flavours were excellent, I was excited we had leftovers to bring home, and the kids were fed (and happy). They tried something new (parenting win) and we discovered what just might be the best fried chicken sandwich in Edmonton.
We left satiated, and happy. We’ll be back to Northern Chicken.
