Perogies. It’s one of those foods that we can get the kids to eat, on a dime, without complaining on their part. When we heard of the People’s Perogies, with classic perogie dishes, sausages and a few new inventions to try (like the pumpkin pie dessert perogies), we knew it was somewhere that would be perfect to bring the kids for a quick dinner.
Tucked away in an industrial area of the city, it’s one of those places you could easily overlook if you weren’t sure where you’re going. With easy order, fast-serve and food that was quick to arrive to our table after we ordered, the People’s Perogy is very kid friendly.
We tried four of the menu items on the first trip there – for four of us: an order of the classic potato bacon perogies (pan fried), the beef taco perogies, two sausages to share, and an order of the buffalo chicken perogies. The total came to just over $40, with a couple of drinks to share.
The clear winner of the four dishes were the classic perogies and sausages. The kids devoured the perogies that we covered in sour cream. With the perogy combo with sausage, it was the perfect amount of food for two little kids who don’t eat a heck of a lot, to share.
We snacked on the kids order, and tried the orders that we made, the buffalo chicken perogies and beef taco. Both perogies were stuffed with either beef or chicken, seasoned and deep-fried, giving them a nice crisp on the outside, before they were covered with toppings and sauce to serve. Excited about the novelty of both of these flavours. We agreed they were innovative, and good, but they could both use an extra punch of flavour in the seasoning, or the sauce. There was just something that seemed to be missing from the inside, just needing that little something extra to put them over the edge.
The clear winner of the dinner were the classic perogies. They were pan fried to perfection, had a fantastic filling inside and came with the perfect toppings. They were perfectly textured, and delicious and had both of us reaching for ‘just one more bite’ from the kids plate.
If you’re searching for something new to try for lunch or dinner, the People’s Perogy is open 11-7 on Monday to Friday, perfect for an early dinner or lunch with the kids. Find it at 13645 149 St NW, in Edmonton.
