We love all of the events going on for Open Farm Days. For something that’s going to give kids the chance to learn about everything from urban farms to backyard chickens, Northlands has a host of events this weekend, on Sunday. Here are some of the things to do to celebrate Open Farm Days at Northlands on August 21, 2016.
Backyard Chickens (11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.) – Meet Northlands’ seven new residents and help name them. Children can get up close to an urban chicken coop and learn how their own families could one day house hens.
Honey Harvesting (9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.) – Join Edmonton’s urban beekeeper, Lola Canola, as she takes little ones through a tour of Northlands’ urban bee hives. They’ll observe these fascinating insects up close and maybe even get a taste of fresh honey from the source!
Face Painting and Mini Animal Farm (all day) – Families can enjoy a country fair atmosphere inside the city. There will be opportunities for the kids to get farm-themed face painting and then the littles ones will be able to get up close with their favourite farm animals.
Dummy Roping (all day) – Aspiring cowboys and cowgirls can get their rodeo fix with our dummy roping activities. Kids can learn how roping works and test out their skills on-site.
Urban Farm Tours and Demonstrations (9 a.m. and 1 p.m.) – Farming isn’t just for those who have access to acres and acres of sprawling land. Everyone has the opportunity to farm with a bit of dirt and some dedicated work.
Farming in your Backyard demonstration and learn how you and the family can start an urban farm right at home. Then take an Urban Farm Tour (9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.) presented by Lactuca to see how Northlands has transformed surplus urban space into a commercial farm right in the heart of the city.
