Rediscover the joy of winter at the Silver Skate Festival, an annual spectacle of sport, art, and recreation in Alberta’s capital city. Glide across the city’s largest skating pond at Hawrelak Park. Marvel at snow sculptures created by talented artists. Root for the athletes in the Edmonton Winter Triathalon (or compete yourself). Delight in your children as they take their first steps in snowshoes. This February, bring your family to Hawrelak Park and rediscover your love for all things winter.

Fire Sculpture at Silver Skate
Throughout each day of each weekend, a team of fire artists will be building a sculpture to be burned at 7:45pm later that evening. Each day features a different team of artists and each day presents a different interpretation of the story, “The Land of the Golden Apples.” In the story, the fire represents renewal and the release of thoughts that make us sad or any fear or regret that chases love from our hearts. The public is invited to write down any of the aforementioned thoughts in the Storytelling Tent to be offered to the fire sculpture.

See: Rebecca and the Bad Wizard
Rebecca and the Bad Wizard tells the story of how Rebecca saves Nice Town from the bad wizard. This children’s opera uses famous tunes from some of the great operas, including Carmen, Faust, La Traviata, Tales of Hoffman and more! This performance showcases present and past students of the Conservatory and is directed by Ron Long. The students include Ruth Wong-Miller, Josh Thayer, Nicole English and Michael Long. Music direction and piano provided by Spencer Kryzanowski. All proceeds will go to student scholarships.
