Two of our contributors at Raising Edmonton are expecting, any day now. Finding fitness classes to get back strength and help with recovery after childbirth can be tricky, because now you’ve probably got one, or even a couple of children to try and fit into a fitness schedule. Classes where you can bring along the kids, and skip the cost of childcare, are easier to fit into the budget – and easier all around.
Here are some of our favourite ‘bring your kids’ fitness classes in Edmonton
Surfset | With kid-friendly classes every week, the kids can take part in the program or sit beside you and hang out during the high energy class, contained in the room. These spots fill quickly, so you’re going to want to get on the list ahead of time. Surfset not only happens to have kid-friendly spots, but they’re also one of my favourite workouts in Edmonton.
Spinunity | Spin class is another favourite workout for this mom. The fast paced class makes me feel energized, and when you’re in the zone, it’s an incredible feeling to push through. Seeing those kilometers rack up at the end of the class isn’t so bad either. Though not in the same room, there are child-minding classes at Spinunity.
Yoga for Today | Fit-Mama is a class for postnatal moms and their babies 6 weeks and older. This class brings Yoga and Pilates together to create a class that strengthens and restructures the core while cultivating strength for the whole body and mind. We will also interact with the babies through playful songs and baby yoga postures.
Moksha Yoga | Perfect for parents of preschool aged children, you can get a workout in at the same time as your child takes part in the drop-in class. This gorgeous and relaxing studio offers lunch time classes on Tuesdays for parents, at the same time as the preschool class, making it even easier to fit in that workout.
Baby Barre | Baby Barre is a post-natal barre class designed to give new moms a dynamic barre workout with their babies safely nestled into their own carriers. This class will not only offer you a fantastic workout, but an activity you and your new baby can enjoy together. There are also child-minding classes available.
Strollercize | Available through the City of Edmonton, these 75 minute classes are filled with a combination of high and low impact activities, where children remain in the stroller throughout the duration of the class. If weather permits, these classes can go outside.
Hot Mama Fit | With various locations through the city and convenient schedules you can bring your kids along for varied workouts. There are programs where you can ‘tag in’ and enlist the other moms in the class to switch it up and help with the kids, or workout programs where you can participate, with your kids and babies in tow.
Healthy Rhino | A toy area, and different workout options that enable you to bring your kids without the added cost of childcare, it’s family-run, so they get the parenting-while-you’re-trying-t0-get-in-shape-thing. There are no restrictions when children can come, but there are recommended times when other parents bring along the kids.
