Brunching. That’s where you’ll find us on Sunday mornings. Breakfast at-home is fine the rest of the week, but Sunday morning? That’s the time to try somewhere new, like the time we had brunch on a train, or eat at one of our old favorites just minutes away from our house.
Moxies
I bet you didn’t know Moxie’s had a brunch menu, did you? Plus, you get the bonus of $5 bellinis on Sunday, because you just know that brunching with kids is easier when there’s a bellini involved. Heck, they’re on sale – get two. The kids brunches are generous in size ($8) and it comes with juice. Moxies is one of the only places that we brunch with the kids that comes with unlimited juice with the meal (and dessert). Try the mini egg sandwich, it’s a hit around here with our kids and comes with a generous portion of fruit.
Square One Wye Road
Those pancakes though. They’re like a combination between a crepe and a pancake and when you request an order be split in two for the kids, they’re generous enough to split it up into two plates with the sides to share. Also, the jam – that strawberry watermelon jam is the thing that dreams are made of (be warned: it does come with an extra cost). The regular breakfast is okay, but it’s the delicious breakfast specials that are changed up every weekend that are the real star of the show here: Nutella and banana grilled sandwiches, a breakfast sandwich on a glazed donut – it’s gluttunous and delicious and you’re going to love it.
Highlevel Diner
Expect lines on the weekend, but you’ll be fine if you go early enough. It’s the perfect morning brunch to start off a day of exploring around the River Valley. It’s loud enough in there that it’s not going to matter if you’ve got a gaggle of kids with you, and the service is pretty quick too. You can get the delicious cinnamon buns to share with the kids in the restaurant, with breakfast, and even pre-order a dozen to bring home with you. Wondering what to eat? Our favorites are the quiche or the farmer’s omelette, and the kids share from ours with an extra order of fruit and cinnamon buns.
Footloose Caboose
Brunch on a train is one of the most exciting things that can happen when you’re five years old. We recommend to make reservations in advance so you don’t have to wait upwards of an hour like we did when we tried it out, but you can check it out and have a fun time exploring the trains through the yard. You can even plan a staycation on one of the train cars to stay the night. It’s in Tofield, so a bit of a trek, but those train-loving kids? They’re going to love it.
Harvest Room Hotel Macdonald
You know sometimes you want a fancy brunch, but you have to bring along the kids so you don’t want to make things too fancy? The Harvest room brunch at the Hotel Macdonald is one of those places where you can get a great brunch buffet, at a bit of a splurge, and walk around the gorgeous grounds when you’ve finished breakfast.
Meat for Dinner (or Brunch)
One of our favorite ‘yummy food’ places for dinner, we decided to bring the kids for brunch one day and it turns out that the loved the flapjacks and chicken. If you’ve got kids that are suckers for sauce and gravy, they’re going to love, love, love this.
What are some of your favorite places to check out for brunching with the kids in Edmonton? Do you have any hidden gems to share with us?
