Outdoor movies in Edmonton are one of those staples of summer. Kid-friendly screenings, movies on the Avenue, outdoor movie nights with entertainment and even movies on the square, there are plenty of places to catch an outdoor movie – starting this weekend. You can see popular releases from this year, and check out local food trucks, or bring your own picnic for a great outdoor movie family-date-night.
Movies on the Square | August 2, 9, 16, 23
Easily one of our favourite events, show up early and get the best spot near the front row. Fun kids activities before the show, food, and a lot of great nearby restaurants if you want to bring a picnic, the season kicks off with Star Wars – the Force Awakens.
Fern Gully at the Legislature | August 10
Head out to the Legislature and watch Fern Gully and take part in fun activities. Bring a blanket and chairs, camp out on the lawn and watch a solar-powered movie. Introduce your kids to this classic movie of your childhood (or mine?) and revel in the fact that the movie is being solar powered!
Movies in the Park | August 11
Zootopia is back and playing at one of our favourite outdoor movies of the year – movies in the park. Head to Broadmoor Lake at Sherwood Park and watch the movie, play in the playground and eat delicious food from food trucks, while you take part in family fun.
Drive in Movie Night | August 12 + 19
Drive in Movies are more exciting when they’re free, right? Drive up to St. Albert Centre and take in two drive in movies through the month of August, with the family. Stay tuned for the movies that are going to be showing at the event.
Jubilee Outdoor Movie | August 14
You’ve got the option of staying in your vehicle or getting out and sitting on a blanket to watch the movie as part of the Grove Cruise weekend events.
Stony Plain Outdoor Movie | August 18
Every August, the Town rents a big screen and shows family friendly Hollywood blockbusters at Heritage Park – for free. All refreshment sales donated to charity. Kids activities start at 8pm and include inflatables, arts and crafts and games.
Open Air Movie Night | August 18
Stony Plain’s Outdoor movie night at the golf course is a fun evening out for the entire family. Pre-movie activities like arts and crafts, games and inflatables make the evening a fun experience for the littlest of kids, who get to stay up past their bedtime. Movie to be moved inside the Pavillion in the case of bad weather.
Movie Under the Stars | August 19
It’s like going to a drive-in movie, but you need a lawn chair or blanket instead of a car. Movie Under the Stars is a fun family night that has become one of the community’s favourites.
Drive in Movie Night | August 26th
Catch the Little Prince at Corpus Christi, during one of the drive in movie nights. Tickets can be purchased in advance for The Little Prince – easily one of our favourite movies that has debuted this year. It’s $20/car, and there is concession availabkle.
Terwillegar Twilight Movies | September 3
From a giant outdoor video game competition, to a screening of the Little Prince, you’re going to want to check out these neighbourhood movies as a chance to get to know the community you live in. There’s even an adults-only, date night screening.
Outdoor Movie Night | September 9
Head out to the movies, celebrating one last hurrah before the kids go back to school. Mark your calendar, the movie will be announced closer to the date of the event.12
