With fall right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get kids in the kitchen. Teaching kids about food and giving them the chance to experience through programs like this, encourages them to gain the confidence to try the foods on their own. Getting them in the kitchen helps to reduce the struggles that traditionally come with dinner, and can even get kids excited about building their own school lunches with their new skills.
Try this: the next time you’re shopping at the Supermarket, try something new from the produce section. Research how to prepare it together, or learn more about it – and give it a try, as a family! Encourage experimentation, and your children might just surprise you.
Future Foodies is a brand new Edmonton program, designed to get children excited about food, encouraging them to get in the kitchen in parented and unparented programs, for children as young as six.
Future Foodies Kids Programs
Future Foodies Jr is a program designed for children in grades 1 – 3. They are introduced to some of the basic skills required to participate in kitchen activities, such as chopping and measuring. The different food groups and the benefits of eating from the different food groups are also discussed at each session. This program ends with a Food Discovery project where the participants are asked to answer a variety of questions about a selection of produce and then share what they learned with the group. Parent or Guardian participation is required for this program.
Future Foodies Kitchen Basics is a program designed for those aged 10 and up. This program is more fast paced than Future Foodies Jr and incorporates elements of meal and grocery planning. Along with the different food groups, the nature of processed food is discussed and the benefits of eating real food, not food-like products. This program ends with a family meal where each participant will invite a family member to join us and as a group, the participants will prepare a meal for themselves and their family members to share. Parents or Guardians are welcome to stay for this program, however, it is not required.
Programs are taught from the South Edmonton Sejong Multicultural Centre providing parents with a convenient location for the parented and unparented programs where kids can learn about food. Through the weekly sessions, kids will even learn to prepare their own dishes that can be enjoyed at the class, or brought home to enjoy with the family.
