Each Tuesday in August, Direct Energy and the City of Edmonton present Movies on the Square – a free outdoor movie series. Come to Sir Winston Churchill Square to watch a family favourite film. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the fabulous pre-movie entertainment before taking in the blockbuster hit that will be playing on a 3-storey high inflatable screen.
Activities start at 7pm and include fun for kids, contests for the best seats in the house, food from local food trucks and more. It’s the perfect time to come early, lay out a blanket or set up some chairs and get your spot for the movie to start later, at dusk.
What’s Showing in 2016?
August 2 Star Wars: The Force Awakens
August 9 Angry Birds
August 16 Zootopia
August 23 Kung Fu Panda 3
Here are some of our tips for movies on the square in Edmonton:
- Don’t forget a sweater, when the sun goes down and you’re making your way to the car at the end of the night it can be pretty cool – keep warm!
- Bring snacks with you if you’re trying to stay on budget – there are food trucks around or take out that you can bring with you, but snacks from home make it a wallet-friendly, truly free event.
- Bring chairs and picnic blankets that are easily folded and have straps that can make it easier to carry them at the end of the night. It’s hard to carry tired kids and the chairs and food you’ve brought along without these straps.
- Come early, set up your spot and enjoy the fun before the show starts and get a great seat as the event fills quickly.
- Bring a friend or a partner, the more adults to come along and watch the kids, the easier the show is going to be – especially if the kids want to take part in different activities while you’re there.
