Getting out of town for a county fair (or three) is one of the summer traditions the kids have grown up with. We love a good midway, fair food, and the opportunity to get out town and explore somewhere new.
Here are our favourite choices to get out of town and explore a county fair in Alberta:
Vegreville Fair | Every year we bring the kids to Vegreville for the County Fair. We round up a group of our friends, and the kids run around the field and go on as many rides as they can until it starts to get dark, and it’s time to drive home. Here, they’ve got freedom they would never have at a midway in the city – and they love it.
Westlock Fair | Come for the Midway, the mini chuckwagon races and the tractor pull. You’re going to want to check out everything that the fair has to offer, from the pancake breakfast and parade, to the petting zoo. The midway has unlimited ride deals on Friday between 3-10, the perfect time to visit.
Blackfalds Days | From a family dance party in the street, to the free family pancake breakfast, there’s a full day of fun to be had when you head out of town and to Blackfalds, Alberta. For older children (13+), there’s an incredible mud obstacle course that’s bound to cool you off, and it’s only $10/person when you enter with a team of four or more. There’s no midway, but lots of other activities and things to explore in the area.
Blue Heron Fair | The Car Derby, fair food and outdoor movie night on the ball diamond are three of the reasons that set this fair apart for us. Worth the drive from Edmonton. The drive home might be late after the outdoor movie, but the kids are going to be tired, so you can be it’s going to be a quiet one.
North Country Fair | Come, check out our Solstice Celebration. Great music, rustic camping, a beautiful Boreal Forest venue, delicious food, craft vendors, interesting workshops, children’s activities. The Solstice Sun barely sets and the music plays on til dawn. Bring a friend or find one here, there’s no midway but you can spend the weekend at our favourite beach, Devonshire Beach, in Slake Lake.
